Identical Souls? Soul Mates?

I may have been reading and watching too much sci-fi lately because I am wondering if a human were cloned would it have a soul?

I don’t know how to be sure of an answer to this…What do you think?

I’ve thought about that, too. I go back and forth, but I think I fall on the side of no soul. Only God can create a soul and that was done before the foundations of the earth. Man might be able to re-create the physical aspects of the human form, but the soul? I don’t know.

It is interesting to consider, is it not?

  2. Radagast Says:

    Of course they do!

The *identity* doesn’t stop them from having a soul, since identical twins have souls.

The *artificiality* doesn’t stop them from having a soul, since IVF babies have souls.

Of course, cloning humans may not be possible.

The fact that souls are created before time is not a problem theologically, for a Calvinist. God knew that the clones would be made, and made souls for them. The mode of conception (which is bottom line what cloning is) is secondary to its fact.

Lintillas 1,2 and 3: “well, why is there only one of you?”
Arthur: “Can I have notice of that question?”

And you know, thinking about this more…I may even be asking the wrong question…The idea of humans having souls is so very Platonic that I’m not sure I’m even thinking in a Biblical framework when I ask the question. What does the Bible say about humans having souls? What is a soul Biblically?

  5. Radagast Says:

Well, the word “soul” certainly occurs in the Bible a lot…

  6. missmellifluous Says:

    Go on…
…what does it refer to? And is is something separate to the body, as Plato construed?

  7. Radagast Says:

    I would think so.

“When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained.” (Rev 6:9)

“I saw thrones on which were seated those who had been given authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony for Jesus and because of the word of God…” (Rev 20:4)

“Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matt 10:28)

“God, then, made man in His own image. For He created for him a soul endowed with reason and intelligence, so that he might excel all the creatures of earth, air, and sea, which were not so gifted… Wherefore, as regards bodily death, that is, the separation of the soul from the body, it is good unto none while it is being endured by those whom we say are in the article of death. For the very violence with which body and soul are wrenched asunder, which in the living had been conjoined
and closely intertwined, brings with it a harsh experience, jarring horridly on nature so long as it continues, till there comes a total loss of sensation, which arose from the very interpenetration of spirit and flesh.” (Augustine, City of God)

Just reading about the dust storms and drought in Sydney. Are you alright? The photos looked positively eldritch (a new word I just learned today and thought I’d never have occasion to use!)

Shoot me an email and let me know how you’re doing. It’s been TOO LONG since we’ve communicated!

  9. missmellifluous Says:

    Will email you soon, Kim!
We are fine. Were breathing a lot of dust and everything had a strange red hue – it all happened the day AFTER I spoke to Year 10 about Revelation. Ha! – for a while but fine. 🙂 Miss you! xo

Some “Science” dismisses the existence of a god as medieval Hocus Pocus ( the Enlightenment’s bastardisationof ‘Hoc Est Enim Corpus Meum’ which are the Latin words of the consecration whereby (according to the catholic faith) the substance of bread changes into the substance of Christ. With neither place (that which is ocupied) nor tangibility (that comprised of matter….but Dark Matter is the new conundrum) no-thing has entity – ie if I can’t find it somewhere along the Atomic Scale,it ain’t there…it’s witchcraft &/or hocus pocus ..que? Sadly that “logic” must thus deny the existence of entities such as Justice(where did I put that – and what’s its Atomic Weight?) a Right (that which is owed) and whatever else exists “out there” beyond the tangible. Sad really. All that has arrived here and now did so by a very very very long ( the weight of numbers argument) series of flicks, flops, bumps and breaks between all the bits floating around in a steamy swamp billions of years ago..right up to today, as farmers cross fertilize and cross pollinate herds and crops tomodify the genetics of their herds and crops – as they’ve been doing since they stopped chasing hairymammnoths around glaciers with sharp sticks… Nup. If you reckon it’s all chance and accident then don’t ask how your Porsche ended up in my garage -you already know how it got there…by chance and accident.Otherwise you might have to use “logic” ( what’s its chemical composition again? ) to arrive at REASON..then CAUSE…..after which you might have to rewind the tape back to:” how did all this start?” Maybe by chance (nup..because I know you nicked my Porsche) ..ok…somebody did this. How about we give that Somebody a name?

Causality (for every event or happening there is a sufficient cause for that event or happening) is a principle which can be mocked and/or dismissed…..and if so… please don’t ask why I punched your teeth out..lest you be invoking that principle..que? For a 75kilo blob of protoplasm (of which about 50 kilos is water..) dear old Homo Sapiens seems to frequently punch above his/her weight each time he/she either discovers or invents something ..well beyond the chance/accident reality of “evolution & natural selection” in its gurgling along with its 1.5 kilo (and about 30% fat) brain..that ‘thing’ wot invented say..the car..or is there a bit other than the heap of water/calcium/nitrogen making up that he or she? How about a ‘suffient cause’ beyond the physicality of that 75 kilos. As fo me – how about I call that cause the “me-ness of me” AKA my soul. And wha about you? No soul ? Just a 75 kilo composition of stuff – or is there more to you than just protoplasm? And if there is something intangible about you, how would you end its life – givne that it is intangible..ie something which could be called a spirit……not with a gun..so maybe the spirit part of you cannot rot..maybe it “lives” past the time your body becomes a cadaver? Would that mean your soul is immortal?
